Winter ’15/16

_MG_0247

It’s officially spring as of a few days ago but winter was awesome. I did so much and got to meet so many sweet people. Shot a friends wedding, throwing down at new years, flew the drone, snowboarding, and got a dog. I think most importantly though I decided to focus on practicing my photography and really make myself get out and shoot instead of just shooting when I was working. I had a good time doing it too. Work picked up or I got lazy again, I’m not sure but I slowed down on shooting personal projects but I guess that’s what’s awesome about posting. It reminds me that what I really love doing and I think I’ll get back out there this week and do some more shooting.

Solo Road Trip

Mt. Shasta 1

I’ve always wanted to try this out. Driving a long ways by yourself gives you time to do a lot of things that you normally wouldn’t do. That’s mostly think or listen to stuff your normally wouldn’t do on a normal drive. I drove from Orange County, CA to Bend, OR while visiting some friends along the way that I hadn’t seen in a while. In retrospect I don’t know that I would go that far solo again (for fun at least) but you never know. I do think that the first 8-10 hours of driving is totally doable solo again.

Inyo National Forest

IMG_8521-Holland-s

This past weekend was my good friend Morgan Nelson’s Bachelor party, so, we went camping. This place is about 20 miles outside Bishop, CA and is freaking amazing. Even after one of the driest winters we have ever had there was plenty of water still running down this awesome stream. The forest along the river was quite spectacular as well. Being inside a pretty narrow valley made the views spectacular. We were camped out around 9000 feet and the peaks were still about 2000 feet higher than we were. This is definitely a place to come back to, and with all the different locations we can choose from to camp I don’t think I’ll ever end up in the same spot because there is just so many good choices, although I would totally be okay if I retuned to the exact same spot.

Hurricane Marie

IMG_8118-Holland-s

One of the biggest swells we’ve seen in Orange County hit this week thanks to Hurricane Marie. While the wedge was still pretty epic I think that the really cool stuff came from the normally mild newport peninsula. On average, the waves here don’t get much bigger than 4 feet and we rarely see barreling shapes. A good chunk of these photo’s where taken from the 42nd street beach where the average wave was doing 12 feet and getting as big as 15. It was spectacular. I heard that the 17th street area was getting 20+ feet but I didn’t get a chance to check it out.

I wouldn’t want to be a lifeguard on a day like this. A big round of applause to these guys for braving the ridiculous surf and the unbelievable currents that go along with it.

Dogwood Camping

The Nelsons have been inviting me up to Dogwood campground for years, but I never could make it… until now. This place was rad, and I got to sleep in a hammock for the first time.

Joshua Tree

I am not usually a fan of the desert but Joshua Tree durring the early part of the year was pretty cool. It wasn’t hot (that is usually my complaint with the desert), it was actually downright cold, but it still had the serenity that you would expect from a desolate location. I got to do some hiking and bouldering while I was there which is always fun. I don’t have all the pics finished but here is some of them

Mammoth Snowboarding

IMG_3009-Edit

I have never had the opportunity until this past weekend to go snowboarding outside of Southern California. To me that meant no challenge of a truly enormous ski area. As you can see below I had been to mammoth before but the chance to explore the mountain was so much more than I could have hoped for. There is so much to see and do on a hill this size that I didn’t even know where to start when I got there. Luckily I had some guides to help me along the way. I traversed most of the mountain throughout my day but I had to skip most of the runs in-between in order to get to see most of what this mountain will have to offer me in the future. Anyone in southern california who hasn’t had the chance to go up to a big mountain to ski yet really needs to make a point out of it. The experience is something I know I will remember for years to come.

BC pt 2

I have decided that if and when the US economy completely fails, I will be moving to Vancouver. That place is freaking awesome. I spent a few days there after camp and it is probably one of my favorite big city’s ever. The mountains, the buildings, the people, they are all cool. The crime rate (the scary crimes at least like murder) are super low (although car theft is super high, good trade off I guess) and that means you never feel unsafe walking around. Plus the lack of gangs and violent crimes in general in Canada really put your mind at ease (if you are a criminal please don’t move to Canada). Anyway, time for some photos.

It’s been a while

I haven’t posted anything in a while and that’s the problem. Work right now is basically dead. I assume that it is because it’s the beginning of the year and people are getting budgets into order and seeing what they can do this upcoming year. I have been managing to stay afloat by taking sideline small gigs. It isn’t a fun way to work but it is necessary sometimes.

Some good news is that a video I have been working on was approved so as soon as it goes up on their site you will get to see it. I have also been approved to finish the Explore Project video. The goal is to have it finished in two weeks. I have also started doing some live sound mixing again which is always fun for me. And finally some potential good news (although it isn’t yet). If the details work out my company (ThunderFish), and Five Sharp will be working together. This is potential for us to get video work and them to get the web work that fuze group did but stopped doing when we decided to focus on video and photo. I know that this news may be preemptive but it is still the possibility that brings me hope (and me being able to back link to another site ;-D).

Angel Aviation – The 501-(c)3

So I have been doing work for free for this awesome charity called Angel Aviation. They are a part of an umbrella charity called Angel Flight and basically their mission is to fly people for free who are very sick, mostly with cancer, from rural area’s to urban areas for treatment. This is because commercial flight is dangerous to a person with a compromised immune system. Driving is also a major difficulty for a person who has just gone through chemo so this is a very important service that they provide.

Anyways, I thought I would mention it here because I really do feel the work they are doing is very important.
